Happy Memorial Day Weekend, Westsiders.

Wet and windy conditions are ahead as we gear up for the official start of pool season, backyard grilling, and mosquito dodging.

It’s not even June yet, and Jodie is already sick of me saying that, “Our grass needs it” every time it rains.

Today’s Buzz has a 100% chance of brightening your day:

  • The City of Cleveland vs. a historical Ohio City building

The Fridrich Bicycle Building Saga 📍 Ohio City

[Credit Ken Prendergast NEOTrans Blog]

The 143-year-old Fridrich Bicycle building survived two world wars, the Depression, and Cleveland's near-bankruptcy. Its current owner thought he had time to navigate Housing Court, despite many complaints and reports, but the city stayed firm and demolished part of the building anyway.

Wednesday evening, the easternmost portion of the 143-year-old Fridrich Bicycle building at 3722 Lorain Ave. was demolished by a city-hired contractor, just hours after Cleveland posted a building violation notice. A crowd gathered across the street to watch the historic structure come down.

But here’s the thing: according to NEOtransblog, which broke the story, Fridrich's real estate agent Nick Reyes didn't even know about the demolition order until NEOtrans contacted him for comment.

The city's side:

  • Six citizen reports of a "collapsing structure" came in May 18 via the 311 hotline

  • Four other complaints dated back to July 2025

  • The city declared the building an "imminent danger" and "public nuisance"

  • A bowed-out brick wall triggered the emergency demo

The owner's side:

  • Fridrich was actively addressing code violations through the city's appeals process

  • His attorney represented him in Cleveland Housing Court as recently as May 11

  • The property is listed for sale

  • "We would have wanted the option to make repairs if we knew they were going to demolish it," Reyes said

The neighborhood angle: Ohio City Inc. had helped Fridrich make short-term repairs in recent years and even tried to find buyers to keep the historic bicycle shop going. Some residents wished the city had responded this quickly to all decaying buildings, while others expressed concern about losing a piece of neighborhood history. (Full Story)

Citizens Speak Up 📍 Fairview Park

Ward 5 Councilmember Rick Raley said it best after Monday's 5-2 vote: "When citizens stand up and use their voices, it's really beneficial for community." Now Fairview Park gets to find a maintenance garage solution the right way.

Fairview Park City Council rejected Mayor Bill Schneider's plan to buy 22100 Mastick Road for a new maintenance garage and salt dome using ARPA funding. The proposal moved fast but hit a wall when Ward 5 residents raised concerns about property values, noise, and the wetland complication no one seemed ready for.

Councilmember Rick Raley summed it up: "We didn't have concrete building plans. We didn't have concrete budget ideas. We need to get our ducks in a row."

Some neighbors sued the mayor last month to halt the project. After Monday's vote, Schneider shelved it. Council's already eyeing that $1 million for street repaving instead.

Bottom Line: When residents show up and make their voices heard, things can change.

Non-profit Spotlight

Delaney Kilbane had a gift most of us spend a lifetime trying to develop — she saw people for who they truly were.

At just eight years old, the Avon Lake girl had a way of making everyone feel beautiful. Living with epilepsy since infancy, she developed a deep empathy and an instinct to lift people up exactly when they needed it most.

One story captured our heart: At a grocery store, Delaney approached a woman who looked worn down by life, took her hand, and told her she was beautiful. The woman began crying — she lived alone and said no one had spoken to her in months.

When Delaney passed away in February 2026, her mom Megan knew that kind of light couldn't fade. The Live Like Delaney Foundation now carries forward her legacy through kindness scholarships, community outreach, and a 12-day Kindness Kit Curriculum launching in local schools. (Full story via Fox8)

Next fundraiser: Saturday, May 23, 3–4 p.m. at Inner Bliss Yoga Studio (30311 Clemens Rd, Westlake). $50 tickets include a one-hour class. All proceeds support the foundation's kindness programs.

Like when your side project gets its own room in the house (and suddenly you're Jan from The Office with a candle-making studio), Sofia Syed's sandwich concept is getting its own space — Toasted, opening two doors down from Roasted in Lakewood

Roasted owner Sofia Syed along with Alex Compton are opening Toasted, a health-conscious breakfast and lunch café, two doors down from her Lakewood coffee shop at 13427 Madison Ave.

After opening her first Roasted in Tremont in 2022 and a second in Lakewood in 2023, Syed noticed customers wanted more than pastries — they wanted real food.

When her landlord offered the space vacated by Tost Sandwich Café, she jumped at the chance to launch her food concept separately rather than cramming it into the coffee shop.

The menu features build-your-own breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, soups, salads, wraps, vegan options, and fresh-squeezed juices, with plans to open the first week of June.

Westside Pour Over

📊 Ohio - Lawmakers launched a joint committee to study data center impacts with the first meetings set for May 27-28. Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood) says addressing policy, safety, and local control issues around data centers is critical. (Ohio Capital Journal)

💦 Rocky River - The city held a public meeting Tuesday at Memorial Hall to discuss the Lake Road Watermain, Sewer, and Pavement Improvement Project — including a new off-street multi-use trail and auxiliary parking lot across from Bradstreet's Landing Park.

📷 Bay Village - City Council approved a $44,845 contract Monday for security cameras at five city buildings (including panic buttons at the Senior Center) and awarded a $549,743 contract to Site Worx for storm sewer catch-basin rehabilitation at 16 locations across seven streets to prevent stormwater from overwhelming the sanitary system.

This is why every fortune cookie tells you to "trust your instincts":

Emily Purcell of Lorain was grabbing gas for a chainsaw — her fiancé was cutting a downed tree off a neighbor's car — when something told her to buy scratch-offs at the Valero station.

After tossing aside several losers she stared at her last one in disbelief: a $1,000,000 Holiday Wish scratcher. The number 2 meant jackpot.

She read it over and over before showing her fiancé, who told her to drive straight back to confirm. He was right.

The lesson: Follow the weird urge. Buy the scratch-off while you're fueling the chainsaw you're using to help your neighbor.

Purcell and her fiancé are putting the money toward their first home.

Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) at Sandy Ridge Reservation

The striking and somewhat peculiar looking Wood Duck can be seen at the Sandy Ridge Reservation at more than 5x the regional average. The male is one of the most colorful species of waterfowl and they are named as such because they perch and nest in trees.

That’s it for today, Westsiders. Memorial Day was originally known as “Decoration Day”, because the community would decorate the graves of servicemembers who gave their life.

Thank a veteran this weekend!
