☕ Delicious Chickens & The Glick Farm Store

Plus it's been 73 years since the great Westside Tornado

introduction banner for the westside buzz newsletter

Happy Tuesday, Westsiders.

The hottest ticket in town was getting a glimpse of the Union Pacific Big Boy train traveling through the Westside yesterday afternoon.

Folks from Lorain to Lakewood caught a powerful display of American inginuity.

People who saw it firsthand said it looked more impressive than they thought — pristine and surprisingly graffiti-free.

Somehow a 1.2 million pound machine the size of a Boeing 747 is easier to keep clean than our kitchen island.

Today on the Buzz:

  • Sibling Revelry Kitchen comes to River

  • The Glick Farm Store officially opens

  • Farm Dog Fresh now open every Saturday in Avon Lake

Have a great week!

Beets Can Also Grow Roots in Cleveland | Ohio City

Instagram Post

All within a few hundred yards, Ohio City now has a Chipotle, a Mitchell’s flagship location…and a 5-acre working farm with a retail store.

Ohio City Farm — one of the largest contiguous urban farms in the entire country — just put down its own roots with a permanent storefront. The Glick Farm Store (2304 Bridge Ave.) is officially open!

Here's what's growing on the shelves:

  • Fresh seasonal produce and local pantry staples

  • Bulk ingredients and prepared foods made in the on-site kitchen

  • Cookbooks spanning global cuisines, plus garden tools

But the best part isn't on a shelf. Every dollar you spend funds fair-wage jobs for Cleveland's international newcomers — refugees, asylees, and immigrants who've been farming their whole lives.

Sibling Revelry Kitchen 📍 Rocky River

photo of the new sibling revelry kitchen

The new Sibling Revelry Kitchen 19245 Detroit Rd, Rocky River

The folks at Sibling Revelry Brewing are expanding to Rocky River, opening Sibling Revelry Kitchen in the former Old River Tap and Social space.

They made it official on their socials on June 4th but kept the exact location under wraps—until Big Mouth Donuts posted a photo on Instagram showing off the new sign.

A little personal history: when Jodie and I first started dating, she worked at Old River. Let's just say I spent a lot of time there making sure she noticed me.

The space is going to be perfect. A big bar with tall ceilings, plenty of room out front for tables overlooking the river, and in the back, a large open area for events plus a second bar looking out over the patio.

Stay tuned for an official opening date and more updates! —The Buzz & Julie Short

The folks behind Birdietown are about to make you very, very hungry 📍 Lakewood

Just 18 months after opening Birdietown, Tim and Erin Frazee are launching Sundaybird — a fast-casual rotisserie chicken spot Tim fell for during a decade-ago stint in Florida.

Teaming with Edacious chef Andrew Gorski, they're keeping it simple. Think Boston Market, with a westside spin: birds brined, seasoned, and roasted on a 48-chicken glass-fronted rotisserie (the drippings hit a bed of redskins below). Quarter, half, or whole — plus mac and cheese, collards, and Parker House rolls. (Scoop via the Scene)

The way they’re describing it makes me think of Chicken Patio on Put-in-bay (IYKYK). No frills, just the smell of roasting birds attracting hungry passersby.

Sundaybird will be dine-in, carry-out, featuring a few beers on tap.

Location: 15027 Madison Ave., the old Pachamama Kitchen space.

The Westside’s Deadliest Tornado: June 8 1953

photo of the destruction of the westside tornado

The aftermath in West Park [Michael Schwartz Library]

Seventy-three years ago today, the westside learned what a sky turning green really means.

On June 8, 1953, an F4 tornado—part of a monster system that had already killed 116 in Flint, Michigan—tore northeast along Lorain Avenue around 9:45 p.m.

The hardest hit: West 117th to West 130th and Franklin Circle, where homes simply vanished. Downtown got it too, with Euclid Avenue buried in shattered glass before the funnel died over Lake Erie.

The toll: 17 dead, 400-plus injured, and $50 million in damage. Hospitals worked by candlelight.
