☕ Tremont Is Getting a Destination Restaurant

Happy Friday.
The Westside Buzz added a staff member this week. Scotty Briggs, better known around here as Baby Buzz, clocked in Tuesday, September 8, and he's already claimed the 2 a.m., 3 a.m., and 4 a.m. shifts.
An enormous thank you to all the labor and delivery nurses at Fairview Hospital. Olivia, especially — you were an absolute rock star. If there's a Westsider of the Year award, we're nominating you, and we're not accepting other entries.
Mom and Dad are running on fumes. But we're not letting a three-day-old stand between you and the best things happening on the Westside.

A 1928 West Park Colonial this well-kept doesn't come up often. Apparently other people noticed too.

Most animals get famous for being cute. Skunks got famous for clearing a room.
SkunkFest returns Saturday to South Central Park, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free, and it's exactly what it sounds like. A festival built around real pet skunks, brought by the people who own them.
Year 25 comes with an upgrade: a giant inflatable skunk.

We write about a lot of Westside traditions. This is the only one where the mascot attends in person.
Twenty-five years in, they're still clearing rooms. Saturday, they get a whole park.

Vecino 📍 Tremont
Vecino IG
The name means neighbor. Big thing to call yourself when you're the new one.
Vecino opened two years ago in Detroit's Cass Corridor and promptly collected an Esquire Best New Restaurants nod, Restaurant of the Year from the Detroit Free Press, and a spot on the New York Times list of America's greatest Mexican restaurants.
Owners Adriana Jimenez and Lukasz Wietrzynski open location two the first week of November, in J Roc Development's Driftwood building. Seventeen-foot ceilings, exposed concrete, a corner entrance.
Here's the part worth knowing. They haul heirloom corn up from Oaxaca, Hidalgo and Sinaloa, then soak, dry and grind it on volcanic stone. Jimenez likens it to sourdough against white bread.
A 3,000-year-old process, in a brand-new room.
"I'm really impressed by Tremont," Jimenez says. "They have been very welcoming."
If the food is as authentic as it seems, Cleveland will show up.
The Giraffe is Back 📍 North Olmsted

Eight years is a long time to go without hearing from someone. Then they turn up at the mall like nothing happened.
Geoffrey the Giraffe is coming back to Great Northern. Toys "R" Us is opening at the mall sometime this fall, eight years after the chain closed all its stores taking a whole era of childhood memories with it.
Two interesting tidbits:
The chain didn't downsize. It closed all 735 stores. This is a return from zero.
It's opening at Great Northern, a mall plenty of people had quietly written off.
No opening date yet, and no word on the size of the store. When we know, you'll know.
The Westside Pour Over
🏐 Rocky River - The Pirates and Demons hauled a volleyball net out to the football field Tuesday night for what's believed to be the Westside’s first outdoor high school volleyball game under the lights. The Pirates defeated the Demons 3 sets to 1.
🍷 Gordon Square - Belinda and Jay have listed Wyne Tasting Bar for sale after building it into a neighborhood hub, so if you've ever daydreamed about owning a wine bar, it’s time to say ‘wine not’.
🏊 Fairview Park - The Gemini Center has one of the best natatoriums on the Westside and nowhere near enough lifeguards to staff it, making this the rare civic crisis your teenager can personally solve for an hourly wage.
🚓 Avon - The city's Health and Safety Fair takes over the Aquatic Facility on Detroit Road on Saturday from 10 to 1, including a first look at the police department's newly acquired Bearcat, which is a considerable amount of truck for a Saturday morning.
